February 2025
February produced its second Tropical Cyclone that threatened the Pilbara coastline of Karratha, fortunately and thankfully this system that peaked at a Category 5 crossed the coastline north of Port Hedland in the De Grey area, well away from our little piece of paradise. As this system moved through the region, glassy calm days were a welcome change that was a vast difference to our typical windy summer conditions. With calm waters and blue water pushing down the coast, a lot of the local population got a chance to head out to the blue.
Good mate “Wardy” got to run in his new outboard which him and the crew catching Coral Trout, Red Emperor and Rankin Cod, crew said that the trout were so thick that every spot produced them, not a bad problem I’ll say. It wasn’t hard for them to catch their bag limit in these glassy calm conditions.
Skipper Glen received a phone call from good mate “Cranky” to head out to the Montebello Islands to do some fly fishing on the flats to chase permit, GTs and blue bastards. Both Cranky and Glen managed to get a bastard each on fly which was Glen’s first and a big one at that. Cranky also got a solid GT after witnessing 3pack attacks of Gees smash hardy heads along the headlands of Montebello’s. Light tackle spin fishing had Cranky get busted off on multiple XL GTs as the 2 were well and truly under gunned.
As Glen waits for his Contender 30st, he has been refining his skills with the local barramundi both land based and by boat. The local creeks produced quality barra with the biggest for the year to date going 93cm. Average size he and his brother experienced has been around the 78cm mark. Both Live/Dead baits and hard bodied lures have produced fish. Onyx, Glen’s nephew even managed to score his first barra with a length of 79cm.
There has been reports of black marlin in as shallow as 8 meters of water with a local diver having 4 freely swimming around him at one point.
Water temps has been sitting around 31 degrees but it wont be long until we see the season slowly start to change. Stay tuned for March fishing report by following Got’Em On Sportfishing on Facebook and Instagram.
